Two men from Cumbria have accomplished a historic feat. Rich Ensoll and Johan Hoving successfully completed the first-ever circumnavigation of the Island of Ireland in a traditional carrick-style canoe.
The journey took 46 days, covering over 1,500 kilometres. They launched from Crosshaven on 1st July 2025 and returned on 15th August 2025.
Ensoll and Hoving faced diverse conditions, from calm waters to ferocious storms. They paddled alongside dolphins and braved towering Atlantic swells during their expedition.
“This trip was not just about the destination,” they stated. “The friendships built and lessons learned were worth it, even without a record.”
The canoe, named Ronan, was handcrafted by John Wilkinson at Valkyrie Crafts. Though not designed for ocean use, it proved seaworthy, enduring challenging conditions along the coast.
The expedition also raised awareness for two charities: the Kepplewray Trust and Oxfam Ireland. Ensoll and Hoving dedicated the journey to promoting inclusion in outdoor activities.
They posted updates throughout the trip on their website and social media.
Rich Ensoll, a senior lecturer, and Johan Hoving, the founder of River Deep Mountain High, highlighted the importance of connection with nature.
