North Dublin boatbuilders and rowers aim to set off and row the North Channel from Donaghadee to Portpatrick in two west of Ireland currachs this weekend.
Weather permitting, a crew of about ten from Currachaí na Sceirí in Skerries, Co Dublin, aim to complete the voyage named Slí ár Sinséar in two vessels, along with support craft.
One of the currachs is An Béal Deirg a north Mayo salmon fishing currach with four rowers and a cox, which has featured on the sets of Game of Thrones and King Arthur.
Pull Together – The Skerries crews put their currachs through their paces ahead of Sunday’s planned Slí ár Sinséar voyage across the North Channel to Scotland
The club bought the boat a few years ago and, as Afloat has reported, it competed in a race against the last original Belderrig in Belderrig, North Mayo.
The club has many Mayo links, with participants also from Berlin , Romania, Italy and the US along with Skerries.
The other vessel is an Aran Island work boat named Musha.
Shane Holland of Currachaí na Sceirí says they hope to retrace the sea route of ancestors who may have come to Ireland in skin boats millennia ago, and rekindle friendships in the Mull of Galloway.
“In Galloway we will camp in Portpatrick and link with the local rowing team and fraternise with locals briefly before returning on the Cairnryan to Belfast ferry,”he says.
The currachs will set out from Donaghadee around 8am on Sunday if conditions are right.
