Minister of State for Fisheries Timmy Dooley attended the Nor-Fishing Exhibition in Trondheim, Norway, as the international fishing industry event got under way on Tuesday. The exhibition, which runs from August 18-20, brings together hundreds of companies and organisations involved in fishing technology and the wider seafood sector.
Nor-Fishing and its aquaculture counterpart, Aqua-Nor, are regarded as major international showcases for technology used by the fishing and aquaculture industries, with exhibitors attending from Ireland, across Europe and further afield.
During his visit, Dooley met Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy Marianne Sivertsen Næss, and they discussed innovation and ocean research.
“I was delighted to have the opportunity to visit the exhibition today and see the latest technological developments in the industry,” Dooley said. “I also welcomed the opportunity to meet with the Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, to discuss topics of mutual interest including the importance of innovation and ocean research.”
Dooley also met Stephen Morgan MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
According to the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, the two ministers discussed challenges and opportunities associated with their respective portfolios.
The Trondheim exhibition also gave the Irish delegation a chance to explore emerging technologies with potential applications across the maritime and seafood industries.
“Nor-Fishing has long been recognised as one of the leading global events for the seafood and fisheries sector,” Dooley said. “This has been an excellent opportunity to engage with exhibitors and learn more about the emerging technologies that can benefit the maritime and seafood industries.”
