#WorldRowingChampionships: Claire Lambe finished third in her heat and must compete in a repechage as she seeks a place in the semi-finals at the World Rowing Championships in Chungju in Korea. The Dubliner led early in the battle of the lightweight single scullers, but Ursula Grobler of South Africa powered into the lead after 500 metres and went on to win well. Alena Kryvasheyenka of Belarus took over in second after halfway, with Lambe third ahead of scullers from Singapore and Indonesia.

#WorldCoastalRowing: Three boats from Arklow Rowing Club competed in B Finals at the World Coastal Rowing Championships at Helsinborg in Sweden.

In the men’s single, Cormac Kelly placed fourth of 10, while in the women’s single Jeanne Ní Ghormáin also took fourth in her B Final. The women’s double of Jessica Lee and Deirdre Maghery were third, just 10 seconds behind the winners, Skovhoved Roklub of Denmark.

#RowingIrelandProgramme: The trials process for Ireland crews will begin next month. Crews will be formed much earlier than in recent years and athletes who do not make the World Cup or World Championships squads will be facilitated.

There are four stages:

- An ID Trial at the National Rowing Centre in Cork, September 28th, 2013 which will feature on-the-water testing and will indentify a senior squad for World Cup Regattas and World Championships and development groups at senior, under-23 and junior level.

- Ergometer Tests over 2,000 metres on 23rd November (Limerick) and 30th November (Belfast). These are compulsory save on medical grounds or in exceptional circumstances

- Assessment over 5000m on Newry Canal for invited athletes on February 22nd and 23rd

- Final Selection of World Championships crews, March 22nd and 23rd at National Rowing Centre (junior crews to be formed and tested in regattas)

Athletes based abroad, and those with other valid reasons for not going through this process (including late-developing athletes) can be excepted.

#World Rowing: Ireland will send two crews to the World Rowing Championships in Chungju in South Korea. Claire Lambe will compete in the lightweight single sculls, while Monika Dukarska and Leonora Kennedy will compete in the double. In their last outing Lambe finished fifth at the World Cup regatta in Dorney and the Dukarska and Kennedy sixth. This was the double’s first outing as a crew.

 The Championships run from Sunday, August 25th, to the following Sunday, September 1st.

#WorldJuniorRowing: Ireland’s campaign at the World Junior Rowing Championships ended on a good note, as Bridget Jacques and Hilary Shinnick won the B Final of the women’s double sculls. The host country, Lithuania led through the 500-metre mark, but Ireland soon took up the lead and, with a very high stroke rate, maintained it to the finish. Lithuania were second and Croatia third.

Jack Casey and Andy Harrington fought hard to win their D Final of the double sculls but had to settle for second (20th overall). Bulgaria led through 500 metres and halfway, but the Ireland crew caught them in the final quarter, only for their rivals to regain the lead with a sprint in the final 150 metres.

The Ireland men’s quadruple finished sixth in their C Final, 18th overall. In a race won well by Romania, with Ukraine a clear second, Ireland stayed in touch with the four chasing boats, disputing fifth with Japan in the final quarter.

#WorldJuniorRowing: Ireland’s Bridget Jacques and Hilary Shinnick missed out on the A Final of the women’s double sculls at the World Junior Championships at Trakai in Lithuania.

The first three from today’s A/B semi-final made it into tomorrow’s A Final, and Romania took the most direct route, leading down the course to win. Behind them an exciting battle unfolded. Through the second half of the race, Germany, Ireland and Australia effectively competed for two places. At 1500 metres, Germany held second and Australia third, clear of Ireland. Australia upped the ante and closed up on Germany, and while the Ireland crew pushed hard in the closing stages they couldn’t head either of their rivals. Australia passed Germany to take second. Ireland finished 2.8 seconds down on Germany in fourth. They are set to compete in tomorrow’s B Final.

#WorldJuniorRowing: Ireland had to settle for fifth place in the C Final, 17th overall, in the women’s quadruple sculls at the World Junior Rowing Championships at Trakai in Lithuania today. The crew of Fiona Murtagh, Jasmine English, Erin Barry and Bernadette Walsh had done well to make it through the C/D semi-finals and were very much in touch in the early stages, but by 750 metres they had dropped to the back of the field, and they stayed in fifth until the finish of a race won by Estonia.

#WorldJuniorRowing: Ireland’s quaduple scull of Conor Carmody, John Mitchell, David O’Malley and Paddy Hegarty raced a good race to finish third in their C/D Semi-Final and qualify for the C Final at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Trakai in Lithuania this morning. Romania were virtually unchallenged as leaders through this race, with the Ukraine, Ireland and Russia disputing the second and third qualification places. In the final quarter Ireland took on and beat the Russians to secure third.

The C/D semi-final for the Ireland men’s double of Jack Casey and Andy Harrington had been a very similar race, but Ireland came out at the wrong end of the result. France led all the way down the course, with Ireland, Russia and Bulgaria vying for second and third. Ireland moved into second by the third quarter but the United States challenged strongly over the final half and engaged in a battle with Russia. As Bulgaria faded, Russia and the United States took second and third, while Ireland fell back to fourth.

#WorldJuniorRowing: The Ireland women’s quadruple, which has struggled at the World Junior Rowing Championships in Trakai in Lithuania, showed fighting spirit to take third in their C/D Semi-Final today.

Denmark and Japan secured first and second, but the young Ireland crew of Bernadette Walsh, Fiona Murtagh, Erin Barry and Jasmine English saw off a challenge by Croatia in the middle stages of the race to secure qualification for the C Final for places 13 to 18.
