# ROWING: A collision before the start between the Queen’s University senior eight and the Portadown intermediate four took both crews out of the reckoning at the second head of the day at Lagan Head of the River in Belfast on Saturday. One of the Portadown crew had to be treated in hospital. In the absence of Queen’s, Neptune’s junior 18 eight ruled the waters: they took pennants as fastest crew; fastest junior crew and fastest junior 18 eight. The Belfast Boat Club/RBAI senior crew was the fastest four and Trinity's top women’s senior eight placed well.

#rowing – Hamish Adams has been announced as the new Chief Executive Officer of Rowing Ireland. He takes over from Acting CEO Frank Coghlan and will be based in the National Rowing Centre at Farran Woods, Cork.

Adams moves from his current role with the Irish Rugby Union Players Association (IRUPA) in late February. He has worked primarily in rugby with the New Zealand and Irish Rugby Union's and was tasked with the establishment of the Munster Academy in 2004 and then the development of the professional players welfare programme in 2008 with IRUPA.

Adams said: "I am honoured to be appointed to the role of CEO with Rowing Ireland. Rowing in Ireland has a proud history of both performance and participation and we certainly want to create an ongoing legacy for our members. Rowing is a fantastic community sport that is very accessible to all and it is certainly our priority to grow the sport through innovation going forward."

Rowing Ireland President Anthony Dooley added: "This is a great appointment for Rowing Ireland. We have conducted an extensive recruitment process and believe that Hamish will be a valuable addition to our team. He has vast experience in sports administration and I was delighted when he agreed to take on the role."

Hamish will work closely with Morten Espersen who was also recently appointed to the role of Performance Director at Rowing Ireland. Espersen of Denmark has a rich history of Olympic success and will be looking to the next generation of rowers for Rio in 2016.

# ROWING: Rowing Ireland’s rule-change egm, set for January 12th, has been cancelled. The proposed changes to rules will now come before the agm of Rowing Ireland on March 31st. The decision was made for reasons of efficency and in order to minimise the number of national meetings, according to Frank Coghlan, the Honorary Secretary of Rowing Ireland.

Clubs will now be able to propose changes until a deadline of March 3rd.

# ROWING: Shandon’s junior 18 eight was the fastest junior crew at the Muckross head of the River at the National Rowing Centre in Cork on Saturday. The Cork crew clocked 10 minutes 18 seconds. Trinity’s men’s senior eight was the fastest of the day, with a time of nine minutes 33 seconds for the 3,800 metres.

# ROWING: The Afloat Rower of the Month for November is Paul O’Donovan. The 18-year-old lightweight sculler covered the five-kilometre time trial on Newry Canal faster than any other competitor in the National Assessment. The Skibbereen man finished fourth in the single sculls at the World Junior Championships in 2011. He is now on scholarship to University College, Dublin.

Rower of the Month awards: The judging panel is made up of Liam Gorman, rowing correspondent of The Irish Times and David O'Brien, Editor of Afloat magazine. Monthly awards for achievements during the year will appear on afloat.ie and the overall national award will be presented to the person or crew who, in the judges' opinion, achieved the most notable results in, or made the most significant contribution to rowing during 2012. # ROWING: Sanita Puspure produced her customarily excellent performance to win the 5,000 m time trial at the National Assessment in Newry today, but the rise of young female talent was reflected in the performances of Bridget Jacques and Denise Walsh. Jacques, who is 17, was the fourth fastest woman and Walsh, who just turned 20 and is a lightweight, was just one place further back. Incoming Ireland performance director Morten Espersen said the level of performance he had seen today was comparable to that in Denmark.

# ROWING: Paul O’Donovan, who is just 18 and a lightweight oarsman on scholarship to UCD, set the fastest time in the five kilometre time trial at the National Rowing Assessment on Newry canal today. Five other lightweights recorded the next fastest times. The fastest heavyweight was Eddie Mullarkey, in seventh. Junior standards have risen appreciably and two junior 17 athletes, Conor Carmody and David O’Malley, placed 9th and 10th.

# ROWING: The Neptune Head of the River at Blessington gave Niall Kenny and some other top Galway rowers a chance to blow off the cobwebs in the run-up to the National Assessment in two weeks’ time in Newry. Kenny, a lightweight, won the single sculls well with his effort in the better conditions of the second head.

The honour of being the fastest eight was taken with ease by Trinity – St Michael’s damaged the fin on their boat in the first head and did not do as well as they would have liked in a borrowed boat in the second. Trinity were the women’s eight winners and Marie O’Neill of Cork the fastest women’s single sculler.
