The Hook Sub-Aqua Club, based in the Hook Peninsula 20 miles south of New Ross, Co.Wexford, has laid a memorial plaque on the wreck of the SS.Lismore, which sank off Hook Head on July 11, 1924.

As already reported by Afloat.ie the 100th anniversary of the sinking was commemorated by relatives of the 18 crew who died in a ceremony at Kilmore Quay fishing village on Sunday when the plaque was handed over to the divers.

A big attendance at that ceremony in the village's Memorial Garden to those lost at sea had recalled that only one of the crew, 46-year-old John Carley from Wexford Town, had survived after floating for 28 hours on top of a hatch cover from the debris of the ship and being washed ashore.

The ship, owned by the City of Cork Steam Packet Company, had been carrying cattle and Ford Motor Company parts from Cork to Liverpool. When leaving Cork Port on July 10 it had been observed as having "a list to port." This worsened in choppy weather off the Hook and, shortly after midnight it capsized on July 11, 1924
An investigation into the loss of Lismore concluded the disaster was not brought about by wrongdoing on behalf of Captain or crew. It noted that the cargo was unsafe for rough weather and improperly stowed. Nobody was held accountable.

"Hook Sub Aqua Club completed a dive on the SS Lismore as part of the 100th Anniversary Commemoration and placed the plaque in memory and honour to those who died in the tragedy," said the club.

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.
