Atlantic Assault: A competitor launches off a breaking Atlantic wave during Mayo Mayhem. Entries have opened for the 2026 edition of Ireland's premier wave windsurfing event in County Mayo.

Bookings have opened for the ninth edition of Mayo Mayhem, with Ireland's flagship wave windsurfing competition set to return this autumn on the Atlantic coast of Co Mayo.

The 2026 event will again carry three-star World Wave Tour (WWT) and Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Tour ranking status, attracting Ireland's leading wave sailors alongside international competitors.

Organisers have introduced a dedicated Under-18 fleet for this year's event, with free entry for junior competitors. The move is designed to encourage more young sailors into competitive wave windsurfing while building the next generation of Irish talent.

Competition numbers will remain capped at 24 riders in each of the Pro, Pro-Am and Women's fleets to maximise water time and maintain the event's established format.

As in previous years, Mayo Mayhem will operate on a forecast-based schedule to ensure the best possible wind and wave conditions. The primary competition window runs from 25 to 27 September, with a rollover window from 2 to 5 October if conditions require. A further fallback date may be announced later in the season if necessary.

The competition venue will again alternate between Achill Island and Belmullet, with organisers selecting the location only a few days before racing begins based on the weather forecast.

Competitors receive rescue cover, lunch and refreshments, an event T-shirt and access to the social programme. Should the event be held on Achill, it will once again coincide with the Battle for the Lake Festival.

Organisers say the event is aimed not only at experienced wave sailors but also newcomers who are confident with waterstarts, gybes and beginning to jump. Recreational sailors and spectators are also encouraged to attend, with opportunities for free sailing alongside the competition.

Entry costs €70, or €50 for students, while Under-18 competitors can enter free. All competitors must hold current Irish Windsurfing Association membership or provide proof of suitable insurance. Registration is now open through the Mayo Mayhem website.
