The Marine Institute’s head of international programmes Dr Fiona Grant has been honoured with a prestigious University of Galway Alumni Award in recognition of her outstanding leadership and contribution to marine science.

Dr Grant’s distinguished career in marine science and her leadership at both national and European levels have played a vital role in addressing global challenges that impact society, the planet and our blue economy.

She has been instrumental in shaping Ireland’s marine research agenda, notably through her role as National Contact Point and National Delegate for Cluster 6 in Horizon Europe and as Ireland’s representative in the EU Mission to Restore Our Ocean and Waters by 2030.

Her election as chair of the European Marine Board in April 2024 further underscores Dr Grant’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and promoting the excellence and impact of Irish marine research on the global stage.

In extending his congratulations to Dr Grant, Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute said: “Fiona’s recognition by the University of Galway is a powerful testament to her unwavering dedication to marine science and her exceptional leadership.

“Her contributions have not only elevated Ireland’s standing in the global marine research community but have also inspired a new generation of scientists. We are immensely proud of Fiona’s pivotal role in shaping European marine research strategy, and in enabling the participation of Ireland's marine researchers in collaborative research.”

According to the University of Galway: “The University of Galway Alumni Awards celebrate the accomplishments of graduates and the positive impact they make in their communities—at home and abroad. Selected from a global network of over 133,000 alumni, this year’s awardees reflect the ambition, strength and influence of the university community across a wide range of fields.”

The Marine Institute says it extends its congratulations to Fiona on this well-deserved honour and looks forward to her continued leadership and impact in advancing marine science and research policy.

Marine Science Perhaps it is the work of the Irish research vessel RV Celtic Explorer out in the Atlantic Ocean that best highlights the essential nature of marine research, development and sustainable management, through which Ireland is developing a strong and well-deserved reputation as an emerging centre of excellence. From Wavebob Ocean energy technology to aquaculture to weather buoys and oil exploration these pages document the work of Irish marine science and how Irish scientists have secured prominent roles in many European and international marine science bodies.
