Belfast-based Artemis Technologies has built the UK’s first fully electric foiling pilot boat for the Port of Tyne in the northeast of England, writes Jehan Ashmore.

The Port of Tyne announced the purchase of the pioneering new-build pilot cutter, which marks a major step towards a net-zero pilotage service for the North Sea port. The state-of-the-art vessel, Artemis EF-12 Pilot, designed and built by Artemis Technologies, is to be delivered before the end of the year and will be used to transfer pilots onto the ships delivering goods and cargo to the port and region.

In addition, the partnership between the port and the Belfast high-performance technology boatbuilder is also a significant milestone for the UK’s maritime sector.

The Artemis EF-12 Pilot features cutting-edge e-Foiler technology, is to deliver zero operational emissions while enhancing safety and efficiency. The new technology will provide a cleaner alternative to traditional diesel-powered vessels. Also, the integration of advanced hydrofoil and electric propulsion technologies ensures a smooth, quiet, and safe journey for personnel operating the craft.

It is also another major step towards the delivery of a fully net-zero pilotage service as part of the port's continuing drive to reduce emissions and decarbonise. Such investment aligns with the UK’ Government’s Maritime 2050 strategy, reinforcing the port’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and a cleaner future for the maritime sector.
