More To Boosting Tourism In Dun Laoghaire Than Costly Cruise Liner Plans Says Local Author

#CruiseLiners - Dun Laoghaire's ambitious plans for a modern cruise liner berth would "destroy its natural open shape and beauty", according to a local author.

Writing in The Irish Times this week, Alison Hackett agrees that encouraging the potentially tens of thousands of passengers to "step off the ship" and explore the locality "would significantly help the ailing town" in terms of tourism.

But this would be at the cost of the harbour's appearance, "not to mention the disruption to the very active sailing and boating communities that use the harbour every day, and intensively in the summer months."

Instead, Hackett suggests alternative solutions so that "the liners adapt to suit us (the citizens) and our long-term vision for the town" – such as a comprehensive ferry service to anchorages outside the harbour in Dublin Bay, and greater investment in local attractions like the East Pier.

The Irish Times has more on the story HERE.
