Foyle Port has opened its 2026 cruise season with an inaugural visit from Ponant Exploration. The expedition vessel Le Lapérouse anchored at Greencastle on 16 April, marking the earliest cruise call recorded at the port.
The visit signals the start of what is expected to be a record season for cruise tourism in the North West. The ship is on a 10-day “Celtic Secrets & Landscapes” itinerary from Greenock to Cobh. Its arrival follows recent season openings elsewhere, including West Cork, where the first cruise ship called at Bantry Bay on Sunday, as previously reported. Click the link here for the full story.
A traditional plaque exchange took place onboard between Captain Adrien Eyssautier and local representatives. These included Foyle Port, Fáilte Ireland, Donegal County Council and tourism partners.
Foyle Port Harbour Master Captain Bill McCann said: “We are delighted to welcome Ponant Exploration to the North West for the first time. “The arrival of a luxury expedition cruise line of this calibre is a strong endorsement of the region’s offering.” He added, “This year is set to be a record, with the highest volume of calls and almost 16,000 passengers.”
Shore Visit: Passengers disembark in Greencastle
Eight inaugural visits are scheduled for 2026, alongside a high return rate from previous cruise operators. Expedition vessels will account for over a third of all calls, particularly during the early season.
Le Lapérouse is due to return on 3 May, with further inaugural visits planned later in the season. The cruise programme will run through to 19 September, marking the longest season to date at Foyle Port.
