There have been renewed calls for safety warning signage at the Forty Foot following the rescue of a young boy and his father from the popular south Dublin swimming spot last weekend.
As the Irish Independent reports, a passer-by threw a life ring to the pair after the youngster was swept into the water by an unexpected wave and his father entered the water to save him on Saturday 22 September.
The alarm was raised with the Dun Laoghaire coastguard who were quickly on scene to rescue the father and son from the water.
Local Senator Barry Ward said the incident highlights the needs for warning signage at the entrance to warn swimmers and onlookers of the risks of waves overtopping the often slippery surfaces in the area.
“It has come up as an issue, and unless you know the area well — and even if you do — you don’t know how far those waves come up,” Senator Ward said.
