A history of lifeboats in Dublin Bay since 1802 is the title of a lecture given by maritime historian Cormac Lowth this week (Tues 9th).
In his illustrated lecture to the Tallaght Historical Society in Dublin, Lowth will recount how the first lifeboats in the bay since 1801 were run by port authorities, before the Royal National Lifeboat Institution became involved.
He will recall how a great many heroic rescues were carried out over the years, along with many tragedies - as also documented by the late maritime historian Dr John de Courcy Ireland in several of his books.
Lowth will recall some of the detail of these events, along with the boats and the people involved in extraordinary voluntary efforts to save life at sea.
He aims to show many rare and interesting photographs, images and charts.
All are welcome to the lecture, which takes place in St Maelruan's Church of Ireland Parish Hall, Tallaght, Co Dublin on Tuesday, December 9th, at 7 pm.
