Dublin Port’s chief executive has expressed his frustration with proposals to relocate the port outside of the city.
In an interview with Business Plus, Barry O’Connell says such suggestions are “a bit frustrating. But then I see it as a challenge. We need to do a better job [of] explaining why that is completely unrealistic.”
O’Connell, who took the top job at the port a little over two years ago, says the practical implications “are enormous. They’re never really spoken about at length, and they should be.
“The port is here for a reason. The city is here for a reason, because it’s the only natural deepwater port on the East Coast. There’s been 300 years of development of infrastructure at the port.
“You’re talking about moving what is probably the best route-to-market system I’ve seen anywhere.”
O’Connell also talks candidly about the port’s 2040 Masterplan and the challenges of managing one of Ireland’s most crucial infrastructural assets. Business Plus has more HERE.
