Maintenance is underway at Dun Laoghaire Harbour's East and West Piers this week, including the repainting of the exterior of the upper (red) Lighthouse, including the domed roof, lantern mullions, and perimeter railing.
The East Pier Lighthouse is a protected structure located within a walled enclosure at the end of the East Pier, which is also a Protected structure! The project relates to the Lighthouse building, located centrally within a walled enclosure at the end of the pier, the entrance gates to the walled enclosure and the granite and cast-iron bollards at the edge of the pier for much of its length.

As regular Afloat readers know, these works follow the €2m revetment work to the back of the pier, completed in 2023 by Mayo-based Cunnigham Civil and Marine, who are also the contractors on these latest repairs.
The lighthouse and its surroundings require the following elements of work:
Lighthouse:
- Repointing around single-storey (circular) granite Lighthouse dwelling.
- Repair and re-slating of circular roof of single-storey Lighthouse dwelling.
- Repointing of the granite tower.
- Repainting the exterior of the upper (red) lighthouse, including the domed roof, lantern mullions, and perimeter railing.
- Conservation and repair of timber sash windows on single-storey (circular) granite. Lighthouse dwelling and granite tower.
Entrance gates to walled Lighthouse enclosure:
- Conservation and repair of sheeted timber double gates, including restoring the hinge system.
- A security railing above the entrance gates will be installed.
- Localised re-pointing of cut granite surrounding the entrance gateway.
Bollards along East Pier:
- Consolidation and stone graft repairs to granite bollards.
- Replacement of rings on top of granite bollards where worn/corroded excessively.
- Repairs to cast-iron bollards where corroded and/or damaged.
- Replacement of chain links/shackles between bollards where worn/corroded excessively.
West Pier works
Sections of the Inner Harbour wall on Dun Laoghaire's West Pier have been identified as requiring re-pointing with an element of masonry Photo: Afloat
On the West Pier, specific sections of the Inner Harbour wall have been identified as requiring re-pointing with an element of masonry to be repaired and re-instated in certain areas. Such work is required to maintain and enhance the strength of the masonry Harbour wall and prevent further deterioration. The granite paving at the roundhead had subsided and is being re-levelled following ground investigations, which ruled out any underwater structural issues with the pier.
