Dun Laoghaire Harbour has initiated one of Ireland’s first electric wheelchair-accessible boating services – named Boathub.
In a significant step forward to making maritime activities accessible to all, Boathub will enable wheelchair users and people with disabilities to experience the freedom and enjoyment of being on the water, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council says.
The service is centred on an electric Wheelyboat V20, said to be the first electrically powered wheelchair-accessible vessel of its kind in Ireland, and will offer free, bookable harbour trips, angling and boating activities.
Boathub was made possible through the support of Green Kite and Community Foundation Ireland.

Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council with support from Dun Laoghaire Marina has provided the accessible berth and supporting infrastructure for the service.
Cllr Barry Saul, cathaoirleach of the council, said that the initiative “will help ensure that people of all abilities can participate in maritime activities, connect with the harbour and enjoy the many wellbeing benefits that come from spending time outdoors”.
Frank Curran, the council’s chief executive, said that "Boathub marks an important milestone for Dún Laoghaire Harbour and demonstrates how innovative design can help make public amenities more accessible”.
Anke Heydenreich of Green Kite said her organisation is “delighted to support the Boat Hub”.

“It’s a great example of a project that’s good for the environment while also improving accessibility, making it easier for more people to get out and enjoy the water. It’s also been a real pleasure working with such a proactive harbour team. And there’s more to come. We’re already working on other projects together, so watch this space,”she said.
Denise Charlton, CEO, Community Foundation Ireland, said that “partnership is central to everything we do as we mobilise strategic philanthropy to advance equality, strengthen communities and protect climate and nature”.
“This initiative brings those values together beautifully. It promotes inclusion and wellbeing, strengthens local connections, and helps more people experience the remarkable natural environment of Dublin Bay."
