In an effort by Stena Line to try and alleviate the buildup of freight and passengers at Irish Sea ports, the company has added an extra sailing at 23.30hrs from both Belfast and Cairnryan on 24th December.

The company currently has very limited space available on its earlier Christmas Eve sailings - 03:30hrs, 07:30hrs, 11:30hrs, 15:30hrs with more availability on the 19:30hrs sailings.

The increased sailing’s on the route follow a challenging time for ferry operators also on the Irish Sea with the prolonged closure of the ferry berths at Holyhead Port due to damage caused by Storm Darragh. In addition to yesterday’s (Sun 22nd Dec) enforced sailing cancellations on the North Channel route due to severe weather conditions, as Afloat previously reported.

Stena Line Trade Director Paul Grant said: “We understand how challenging the last few weeks have been for many of our customers, and we want to thank them for their patience and understanding during this challenging time. Recent weather and operational challenges have led to significant disruptions across our Irish Sea route network, and for that we sincerely apologise.

He added: “Our colleagues have worked around the clock to assist anyone who still needs to travel, and I am pleased to confirm we have added an extra 23:30hrs sailing on Christmas Eve from both Belfast and Cairnryan. We sincerely appreciate and thank everyone for their support and patience during what has been a very difficult few weeks across all our Irish Sea routes.”

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
