The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine has granted Woodstown Bay Shellfish Limited a licence to cultivate mussels in Kinsale Harbour, County Cork. The site covers 23.1626 hectares of the sub-tidal foreshore.
The Minister stated, “It is in the public interest to grant the licence sought.” Factors considered included scientific advice, public accessibility, and local economic benefits.
The area is popular for recreational activities, including swimming from the Dock Bar Beach and cruiser and dinghy racing. Nearby attractions include James’s Fort and Charles Fort.
Key reasons for the Minister’s decision include the suitability of the waters and the project's potential positive impact on the local economy. No significant environmental or fisheries impacts were anticipated, and the licence complies with EU and national environmental regulations.
In accordance with the Fisheries (Amendment) Act 1997, any person aggrieved by a decision of the Minister on an aquaculture licence application may make an appeal within one month of publication (in the case of a decision).
