The Oireachtas Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs will discuss aquaculture innovation and development with stakeholders on Tuesday, November 4.
The meeting at 11 am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from representatives from Bord Iascaigh Mhara (BIM) and the Aquaculture section of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA).
Committee Cathaoirleach Conor McGuinness said: “Ireland’s aquaculture industry sustains coastal and rural communities, supports local enterprise, and contributes to Ireland’s national reputation for producing safe, sustainable, high-quality seafood. “
“Last year the sector produced more than 38,000 tonnes of seafood, mostly blue mussels, Atlantic salmon, oysters, trout and aquatic plants, worth €210m,” he said.
“The committee looks forward to discussing with the representatives from BIM and the IFA how Ireland can develop and grow this important seafood sector, including export markets, as laid out in the National Strategic Plan for Sustainable Aquaculture Development 2030, ”he said.
The committee has 14 members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
Committee proceedings can also be viewed on the Houses of the Oireachtas Smartphone App, available for Apple and Android devices.
