Aquaculture licensing is to be discussed by the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs on Tuesday (Jan 20).
The meeting at 11am in Committee Room 2 of Leinster House will hear from officials from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and representatives from the Aquaculture Licences Appeals Board, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, the Marine Institute and IFA Aquaculture.
Ahead of the meeting, committee chair Conor McGuinness said: “Aquaculture is a key pillar of Ireland’s marine economy but the sector faces significant challenges, including rising costs and licensing complexity causing delays.”
“An independent review of the aquaculture licensing process was commissioned in 2017, concluding that a root-and-branch reform of the aquaculture licence application process is necessary,”he said.
“The current overall government strategy for food production, Food Vision 2030, calls for legislative change around the aquaculture licensing system to maximise market demand and growth in the sector,”he said.
“The committee has previously heard from industry representatives about the impact of ongoing delays and welcomes this engagement with key stakeholders in the aquaculture sector. Members look forward to hearing their views on reform of aquaculture licensing, the key challenges they face, and related matters,” he said.
The Joint Committee on Fisheries and Maritime Affairs has 14 Members, nine from the Dáil and five from the Seanad.
The meeting in Committee Room 2 can be viewed live on Oireachtas TV.
