Inland Fisheries Ireland is seeking public views on proposed oyster dredging licences in Tralee Bay and Lough Swilly for 2027–2032, with environmental assessments published for both locations.
Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) has opened public consultations on proposed oyster dredging licences in Tralee Bay, Co Kerry, and Lough Swilly, Co Donegal, covering the period from 2027 to 2032.
In notices published on Wednesday, 14 October, IFI said it was considering issuing annual licences to dredge specified areas of the two bays for oysters.
Following public and statutory consultation, IFI will decide whether to issue licences with conditions or not to issue them. No approval is announced in either notice.
IFI has published an Appropriate Assessment screening determination and a Natura Impact Statement for each location as part of the consultation documentation.
Tralee Bay Restoration Context
The Tralee Bay proposal follows the announcement in August of €7.9 million in funding for the Tralee Bay Marine Biodiversity Restoration Project, a five-year initiative involving the restoration of native oyster beds and eelgrass meadows.
The project is funded and overseen by the National Parks and Wildlife Service and led by University College Cork, working with local partners including Tralee Oyster Society and Tralee Bay Hatchery. It is expected to run until 2031.
The dredging consultation and the restoration project are separate developments concerning the same bay.
Lough Swilly Consultation
In Donegal, IFI is considering annual oyster dredging licences for specified areas of Lough Swilly over the same 2027–2032 period.
The Lough Swilly notice invites submissions by email to [email protected] or in writing to the Director, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Station Road, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, F94 WV76, before 13 November 2026.
Submission Dates
The Tralee Bay notice invites submissions to [email protected] or the Director, Inland Fisheries Ireland, Sunnyside House, Macroom, Co Cork, P12 X602. It states a deadline of 11 November 2026, although it also describes a 30-day consultation period from 14 October. Anyone intending to make a submission should check the deadline directly with IFI.
The two consultations follow a separate oyster dredging consultation for Blacksod Bay, Co Mayo, reported by Afloat on 16 October.
Supporting environmental documents for Tralee Bay and Lough Swilly are available through the respective IFI notices. The licensing proposals remain subject to consultation and decision.
