Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue, T.D., held a crucial meeting with representatives from the fishing industry on Tuesday evening, June 25th. The discussions centred around the upcoming 2025 fishing opportunity negotiations and were reported to be 'quite productive'.
The gathering was attended by key representatives from various organisations, including the Irish South and East Fish Producer Organisation, the Irish Fish Producer Organisations, the Irish South and West Fishermen’s Organisation, Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation, Irish Islands Marine Resource Producer Organisation, National Inshore Fishermen’s Association, National Inshore Fisheries Forum, and the Irish Fish Processors and Exporters Organisation.
In a statement following the meeting, the Minister expressed, "The annual fishing opportunity negotiations will commence in the autumn and I wanted to take this opportunity for an initial discussion with industry to prepare for this process."
Furthermore, he emphasized the need to understand the potential impacts and benefits for Ireland arising from possible fisheries negotiations between the EU and Third Countries and urged the industry groups to collaborate and express a unified view that will aid in considering Ireland's position for any future negotiations.
The Minister thanked the industry representatives for their participation in the productive meeting and pledged to continue working closely with the sector to secure a sustainable future for the seafood sector and the coastal communities that depend on it.
