The European Association of Fish Producers Organisations has strongly criticised environmental organisations which have called for retailers to stop selling and buying mackerel.
These organisations lack knowledge about the fishing industry, according to a statement, which repeats complaints by the Irish fishing industry about the overfishing of mackerel by Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, and Russia.
It says “the industry is frustrated over calls by some environmental NGOs such as GoodFish and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to stop selling and buying mackerel, despite the EU being the only party still adhering to scientific catch limits.
“We understand the situation better than them. Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Russia have compromised the stock and caused the problems. The industry has repeatedly called on the EU to take action against those nations setting and fishing excessive, by up to 55%, unilateral quotas.
“What the NGOs are doing is a blow to the EU fleet that is showing restraint and responsibility in this fishery. It is not helpful in negotiations to stop excessive fishing.”
