The annual Irish Groundfish Survey (IGFS) will be carried out by the Marine Institute off the Atlantic coastline of Ireland between Thursday 30 October and Monday 15 December, subject to operational and weather constraints.
The IGFS is a demersal trawl survey consisting of some 170 fishing hauls of 30 minutes duration each in International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) areas
Vla, Vllb, Vllg and Vllj, in fulfilment of Ireland’s Common Fisheries Policy obligations.
The approximate locations of the shooting position of these hauls are set out in the tables in Appendix 1 and a map indicating each position is available in Appendix
2 to Marine Notice No 62 of 2025, attached below. Fishing in the 2025 survey will take place within a two-nautical-mile (2 nmi) radius of these indicative positions.
The survey will be conducted by the RV Celtic Explorer (callsign EIGB). The vessel will deploy a high headline GOV 36/47 demersal trawl during fishing operations, and will display appropriate lights and signals.
The Marine Institute requests that commercial fishing and other marine operators keep a 2nmi area around the tow mid-points clear of any gear or apparatus during the survey period outlined above.
Further details, including a map and coordinates of the trawl survey area and contact information, can be found in the Marine Notice attached below.
