The fishing industry in Wexford’s Kilmore Quay is “on the brink of collapse”, a local politician has warned.
As South-East Radio reports, concerned fishermen expressed their fears for the future at a meeting with Minister of State for Fisheries Timmy Dooley earlier this week.
They spoke of vessels having to return to port early due to the high costs of staying out at sea.
They also said that the implementation of aspects of the 2006 Maritime Jurisdiction Act has criminalised their profession.
Rosslare councillor Jim Codd (Aontú) called for fisheries offences to be removed from the criminal justice system and replaced with a fairer system of penalties.
Unworkable quotas and soaring diesel prices were also raised.
Mr Dooley was told that Belgian fishing vessels with a much larger quota of black sole are hiring local hauliers to bring catches back to Belgium.
While Belgium holds 567 tons of Black Sole quota, Ireland has just 28 tons, the delegation said.
