Fishers are set to benefit from a dedicated fuel support scheme under a €100 million Government package aimed at easing rising energy costs across primary food sectors.
The announcement was made by Martin Heydon, who outlined supports for farmers, contractors and fishers facing sustained increases in fuel prices.
“A targeted and practical support package based on actual fuel usage ensures that those most exposed will receive meaningful assistance,” he said.
While the main scheme covers farmers and agricultural contractors, the fishing and aquaculture sector will be supported through a separate programme.
This scheme will be administered by Bord Iascaigh Mhara on behalf of the Department.
It will be calculated based on fuel consumption, with tailored eligibility criteria reflecting different categories within the seafood sector.
The Department said the approach recognises the distinct operational pressures faced by fishers, particularly around fuel dependency.
The scheme is expected to open for applications in May, subject to State aid approval processes.
The wider package includes supports equivalent to around 27.5 cent per litre when combined with existing excise relief measures.
