European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) executive director Dr Susan Steele has welcomed the renewal of her mandate to 2031.

She was commenting on LinkedIn after the EFCA confirmed the second mandate, from August 31st 2026, until 2031, when her first term expires.

The decision was announced at the EFCA’s recent administrative board meeting in Vigo, when it also adopted the Single Programming Document (SPD).

The SPD contains the Multiannual work programme 2026-2030 and the EFCA´s work programme for 2026, with an annual budget of 31.6 million EUR.

“This document provides EFCA with a structured framework to outline its operational activities, ongoing initiatives, and future projects for the period 2026-2030, and for the upcoming year, 2026,” it says.

“It was an exceptional week for me,” Dr Steele said of the board’s decision on her mandate.

“I truly appreciate the continued trust placed in me,” she said. From West Cork, Dr Steele was previously head of the Sea Fisheries Protection Authority here.

“There will be a huge amount of work to be done as we continue to promote the highest common standards for control inspection and surveillance under the Common Fisheries Policy,” she added.

“I am grateful to the European Commission, our commissioner, EFCA’s administrative board, all of the staff of the agency for their continued support,” she said.
