European Fisheries Control Agency (EFCA) director Dr Susan Steele has initiated a multipurpose maritime operation which will run in the Adriatic Sea over the coming weeks.
Dr Steele, from West Cork, marked the opening in Bari, Italy, at an event hosted by the Italian Coast Guard.
The operation will be led by the EFCA and has been agreed among staff from the EFCA, the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) in cooperation with the authorities of Italy, Croatia and Slovenia.
The objective of the operation is “to address potential threats and protect the marine environment in the Adriatic Sea, by providing increased technical and operational assistance to the host member states and coordinating operational activities”, the EFCA says.
The participating states are Croatia, Italy and Slovenia with the following national authorities:
- Croatian Ministry of Agriculture, Sector for Fisheries Surveillance and Control
- Croatian Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure
- Croatian Ministry of the Interior
- Italian Coast Guard
- Italian Guardia di Finanza
- Slovenian Maritime Administration
- Slovenian Inspectorate for Agriculture, Forestry, Hunting and Fisheries
EFCA as leading agency contributes with one offshore patrol vessel, the Ocean Sentinel, one fixed wing aircraft, and different systems supporting the operation, it says.
EMSA is providing RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft System) and pollution response equipment on board the patrol vessel and the satellite imagery displayed via the Agency’s Integrated Maritime Service (IMS).
FRONTEX supports Croatia with the deployment of technical equipment and human resources co-financed by Frontex. It provides EUROSUR Fusion Services to enhance situational awareness and reaction capability and is looking for “possible synergies” on the exchange of information between Croatia and Italy, the EFCA says.
The operations coordination centre is established in EFCA headquarters, in Vigo (Spain), with the virtual participation of those participants attending remotely.
This operation includes search and rescue and anti-pollution exercises -SARex/POLex 2025- off the coast of Dubrovnik (HR), led by EMSA.
“The objective of the exercises is to enhance cooperation and coordination among the involved Coast Guard authorities of Italy, Slovenia and Croatia as well as to gain heightened situational awareness and experience in the use of communication systems/channels,” the EFCA says.
