Inishbofin and Bere Island have won the all-island annual soccer tournament, which was held on Inis Oírr, Co Galway
Inishbofin women’s team played seven games, and saw off a very strong Bere Island women’s side to take the final.
Bere Island took the men’s final, which was won last year by Arranmore, Co Donegal.
In spite of patchy weather, which soaked the players at times, the tournament proved exhilarating for all participants.
Initiated in 1998, the annual tournament is organised by Simon Murray of Inishbofin off north Galway.
The winning Bere Island men’s team (Back row, left to right) Keith Crowley, David Sullivan, Dean Hegerty, Conall Kingston, Stephen Crowley, Tomas Murphy, Darragh Harrington, Sean Sullivan, Mikey Orpen, Kevin Sullivan, Billy Murphy (Front row left to right) Luke Sidley, Tyler O'Sullivan, Alan Elphick, Oisin Murphy, Ultan Murphy, Daniel Elphick, Olan Elphick, Marty Orpen
The venue changes every year, and this year Inis Oírr hosted teams from its own island, and from neighbouring Inis Mór and Inis Meáin, along with Arranmore, Clare Island, Inishturk, Inishbofin, Whiddy and Bere islands.
The tournament attracted more teams than ever before, with nine men’s teams competing and 11 ladies' teams.
A tribute on Facebook to the Inishbofin women’s team says it is “hard to sum up how good” they were.
“They won their first two group games and lost the third, meaning they had to go through an additional TWO rounds of playoff games just to make the semi final,” the post says.
“They didn't let it bother them one bit, growing stronger and stronger with every game and putting on a display of pure class and heart to win against a very strong Bere Island side in the final,”it says.
