The only inhabited island off Northern Island is where the Department for Infrastructure is committed to providing a “lifeline” ferry service for Rathlin Island off Co. Antrim.
The DfI has said it will make efforts to continue to secure the travel link for the future.
On Friday, the department announced it had extended the car-ferry and passenger-only services contract to the company currently running between Church Bay, Rathlin, and Ballycastle Harbour through to July 2027.
The 1,371-hectare island with a population of approximately 150 people is served by Dunaverty Ltd, which was awarded the contract just two days after the previous operator, Rathlin Island Ferry, ceased trading after going into administration in January 2023.
The development has brought “huge relief” for the islanders, said Causeway Coast and Glens SDLP councillor Margaret Anne McKillop, as reported by The Irish News, which has further details.
