An Emergency Services Day will be held for the first time on Inis Mór, Aran Island, next Wednesday, October 1.
The RNLI says there is "an open invitation to members of the public to join us on Inis Mór to meet and greet with Emergency Services personnel. There will be ongoing demonstrations throughout the day, including Rescue 115, Aran Islands Lifeboat and the Garda Armed Response Unit, subject to operational availability. The Aran Islands have a dedicated team of Emergency Services available to all three islands, 24/7, 365 days of the year.
This comprises primarily of an HSE Island Emergency Response Doctor, an HSE Frontline Public Health Nurse, An Garda Síochána, The RNLI, The Fire Service, Coast Guard, Cliff Rescue and the Ambulance Service.
The Aran Islands collectively receive up to 3,000 tourists daily during the Summer months, which brings its own unique challenges to all our Emergency Services.
During the Peak Season, there is one airlift per week by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter, and the RNLI's lifeboat has, on average, two callouts per week.
"We want to highlight this partnership with a strong emphasis on presenting an open day to the island communities and the children across our three islands, to showcase how we deal with everyday emergencies in our unique location. Between the three islands, we have three secondary schools and four primary schools, totalling around 300 students and staff. This is the first initiative of its kind on the Aran Islands, and we see it as a powerful opportunity to demonstrate our unique partnership, while inspiring children to consider a future career or volunteer role within the Emergency Services," say the organisers of Emergency Services Day..
An Garda Síochána's Air Support Unit will do a fly-by and landing on the day.
There will be several different Garda units on the island, including the Garda Mounted Unit, the Garda Dog Unit, the Garda Roads Policing Unit, and the Garda Armed Response Unit. It will be the first time since 1911 that a Police Officer was on the island of Inis Mór on horseback.
The RNLI Water Safety team and the Irish Coast Guard units, including Casla Bay and Doolin Coast Guard, will attend. There will be live demonstrations throughout the day, featuring Rescue 115, the Aran Islands lifeboat, Aran Fire and Rescue, and the Garda Armed Response Unit.
There is a passenger ferry departing from Ros a Mhíl at 10:30 am on the day, returning from Cill Rónaín at 5:00 pm.
