The Department of Transport has been notified by Ward & Burke that a small OBS-BUOY 7-watt ocean data acquisition system buoy will be deployed this month off Inis Oírr in the Aran Islands for the purposes of scientific data collection.
The device will remain in the same location until December 2027, marked under International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation
and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) rules as a Special Mark (with a yellow hull and light pattern) such that local mariners know it is a scientific site rather than a channel buoy.
The following vessels will be involved in the deployment and servicing of the buoy: Admiral 1/OCM 401; Chateau Thierry (callsign EI HK6); Madelen (callsign EI 4990); Husky (callsign 2EQ17); Bríd (P4 License).
These vessels will display appropriate lights and signals and will be listening on VHF Channel 8 throughout the course of the operation.
Coordinates and a map of the deployment area, as well as contact details, can be found in Marine Notice No 43 of 2026 attached below.
