At the harbour of the Manx capital is where the last significant phase of the ferry related project to upgrade the King Edward VIII Pier has now been completed.
Works to complete the project in Douglas Harbour, Manx Radio reports involved the installation of two large parallel-motion fenders. The project is to facilitate the Isle of Man Steam Packet’s (IOMSP) fleet to undertake manoeuvres within the harbour using the pier, which is adjacent to the Victoria Pier, which forms the outermost of the two.
The fenders at King Edward VIII Pier, each weighing around 40 tonnes measuring 12.5 metres in height and three metres wide.
According to the Department of Infrastructure (DoI), the mooring bollards installed during the project at both ends of the pier will also enable the Steam Packet’s flagship Manxman to remain in the harbour during storms and high winds.
The flagship this month is almost a year in service on the Douglas-Heysham route, the IOM-England link is the ferry operator’s only year- round operated service.
The DoI added that the project contractor, McLaughlin & Harvey, will soon be dismantling the large crawler crane in the harbour along with the remaining engineering plant. This is scheduled to take place before leaving the waterfront site later this month.
At the pier is where a temporary section of the passenger walkway will remain in place until the length of the structure along the quayside is replaced next year.
