The Maritime Area Regulatory Authority (MARA) and Commissioners of Irish Lights (IL) have signed a significant cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening regulatory oversight within Ireland’s maritime region.
This landmark agreement establishes a framework for enhanced collaboration between the two authorities. It facilitates the sharing of information and data, allowing for better decision-making.
The partnership will pool technical expertise and resources, enhancing both organisations' capabilities in addressing maritime challenges. The goal is to ensure consistent and transparent oversight, boosting confidence among stakeholders and the public.
Minister of State Timmy Dooley commented, “This partnership strengthens our shared commitment to safe navigation and sustainable management.” He emphasised the importance of supporting innovation and marine safety.
Laura Brien, CEO of MARA, stated, “This agreement is a significant milestone. We look forward to collaborating with Irish Lights for the benefit of Ireland’s maritime area.”

Irish Lights CEO Yvonne Shields O’Connor highlighted that Ireland’s maritime area plays a critical role in various economic sectors. “Safe movement of vessels is essential for protecting lives and trade,” she added.
The agreement, formalised under Section 65 of the MAP Act 2021, includes provisions for information sharing, resource allocation, and regulatory cooperation.
Both organisations aim to streamline processes, avoid duplication, and provide clarity in decision-making for maritime users.
