A call for strict control measures at Irish Ports has been raised by the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) to highlight imported second-hand or used forest machinery.
The association’s farm forestry chairman, Padraig Stapleton, has called on the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, as they want to ensure that such machinery entering through the nation's ports does so through these measures.
Such calls from the association arise as it is particularly important in light of Storm Éowyn in late January, as thousands of hectares of downed forest took place throughout the country.
Stapleton said, “The work to salvage the nearly 24,000 ha of windblown timber is underway.
