New 'Green Innovation Compass' Launched on European & Inland Port Organisations' Websites

16th October 2026
ESPO and the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) have launched the Green Innovation Compass, a new knowledge platform to bring together European expertise and practical experience on port innovations, through both organisations' websites.

The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) and the European Federation of Inland Ports (EFIP) are pleased to announce the new Green Innovation Compass.

The knowledge platform brings together European expertise and practical experience on port innovations is now available through both organisations' websites (here and here).

The platform provides maritime and inland ports, as well as other stakeholders in the port ecosystem, with independent and practical insights into innovative technologies and solutions to support their green and digital transitions.

The Green Innovation Compass has been developed as one of the key legacies of the European Horizon 2020-funded MAGPIE project (sMArt Green Ports as Integrated Efficient Multimodal Hubs). Within this project, ports, companies, knowledge institutions, and governments collaborated on innovative solutions for the ports of the future.

Knowledge and practical experience in one place

An important lesson from MAGPIE was that knowledge about port innovations is often available in a fragmented form. The Green Innovation Compass brings this knowledge together on one accessible platform. The information is based on research findings, demonstration projects, and practical experiences from ports, companies, and knowledge institutions across Europe.

The platform covers a variety of innovation themes, such as electrification, alternative fuels, automation, resilience, and digitalisation. For each technology, the Green Innovation Compass provides insights into possible applications, preconditions for implementation, expected impact, and key enablers. The platform does not prescribe a fixed route. Instead, it supports ports in making well-considered choices that match their own situation, ambitions, and stage of development. Users can filter the information according to their priorities, challenges, goals, and timelines.

Making innovation knowledge accessible to Europe's ports

By making the Green Innovation Compass available through their respective websites, ESPO and EFIP aim to facilitate access to knowledge, encourage the exchange of best practices, and support the uptake of innovative solutions across Europe's maritime and inland ports.

“In ESPO we are not only representing the interests of Europe’s ports towards the European policy makers, but we also want to serve as a knowledge network, where port professionals learn from each other. We are thrilled to be able to give access to the Green Innovation Compass, which perfectly fits in our ambition to share good practices, knowledge, and “ambition” among and with our member ports. The pathways towards the green and digital transition cannot be walked alone. We encourage our members to regularly consult and contribute to the Compass," said Isabelle Ryckbost, Secretary General, ESPO.

“Inland ports know that innovation can be challenging. Often, we must find new paths to navigate. But it becomes more feasible when we can learn from each other. In EFIP we are always sharing and collaborating on different ideas and solutions. The Green Innovation Compass allows for inland ports to see what projects others have already realised. The Compass’ accessibility means that a port can easily find relevant case studies to what they want to innovate on in their port. This allows us to be inspired by our colleagues and continue to build the inland ports of the future.” added Turi Fiorito, EFIP Director

A platform that grows with the sector

The Green Innovation Compass is designed as a dynamic platform that will continue to grow. Users are invited to share new knowledge, experiences, and practical examples, helping to ensure that the platform remains relevant and useful for the wider port community. To ensure the long-term continuity of this knowledge platform, ALICE (Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe) will take on the role of legacy partner following the completion of the MAGPIE project.

We've got a favour to ask

More people are reading Afloat.ie than ever thanks to the power of the internet but we're in stormy seas because advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. Unlike many news sites, we haven't put up a paywall because we want to keep our marine journalism open.

Afloat.ie is Ireland's only full-time marine journalism team and it takes time, money and hard work to produce our content.

So you can see why we need to ask for your help.

If everyone chipped in, we can enhance our coverage and our future would be more secure. You can help us through a small donation. Thank you.
