The Department of Transport has been advised that Causeway Geotech will undertake marine investigation and survey works at two sites to the northwest and southeast of Foynes Island in Foynes, Co Limerick.

The proposed works comprise the drilling of a maximum of 67 marine boreholes, 23 surface grab samples and four vibrocores.

The geophysical survey work will include a side-scan sonar survey, a sub-bottom profiling survey and a magnetometer survey.

The operations will commence on Monday 16 December and are expected to last around 12 weeks, subject to weather and operational constraints.

There are two separate areas being surveyed and worked on during these operations. All works and surveys will be carried out within the red line boundary detailed in of Marine Notice No 61 of 2024, attached below.

Coordinates of these locations are set out in the table in the same notice, as are a map of the survey areas and contact details.

The works will be conducted by the Ocean Battler (callsign MGHD9), Ocean Energy (callsign MNKI5) and Causeway Giant 1 and 2.

It is planned that works will be conducted on a 24-hour basis with daily transfers to and from each barge and almost daily movement of each barge, subject to weather conditions.

All craft involved will be maintaining a listening watch on VHF Channel 16 and a working channel will be maintained on VHF Channel 11.

Shannon Foynes Port Information

Shannon Foynes Port (SFPC) are investing in an unprecedented expansion at its general cargo terminal, Foynes, adding over two-thirds the size of its existing area. In the latest phase of a €64 million investment programme, SFPC is investing over €20 million in enabling works alone to convert 83 acres on the east side of the existing port into a landbank for marine-related industry, port-centric logistics and associated infrastructure. The project, which will be developed on a phased basis over the next five years, will require the biggest infrastructure works programme ever undertaken at the port, with the entire 83 acre landbank having to be raised by 4.4 metres. The programme will also require the provision of new internal roads and multiple bridge access as well as roundabout access.
