County Clare’s Loop Head Lighthouse on the Shannon Estuary is set for redevelopment, enhancing both nature and visitor experience, according to the promoters.

The project includes a new café, visitor centre, and expanded car park. It will feature four looped walking trails and improved visitor signage, all while preserving the area's sensitive habitats.

Clare County Council leads the initiative, aiming to boost visitor numbers to this conservation area. The upgraded car park will provide additional spaces, including bicycle and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

Inis Environmental Consultants conducted species surveys to protect the local wildlife, including the important breeding seabird colony. Dr Alex Copland, Technical Director at Inis, noted, “Existing paths will be replaced with waymarked routes to concentrate foot traffic and protect habitats.”

The project has received planning approval and is seeking funding for construction. Deirdre O’Shea, Project Manager at Clare County Council, highlighted the lighthouse's historical significance, stating, “The developments will support the local community and promote the area's rich heritage.”

The new plans will also go easy on local wildlife, with efforts to schedule construction outside key breeding seasons for seabirds. Loop Head is also home to marine life, including seals and dolphins. The walking trails will feature six designated viewing points, guiding visitors through scenic coastal paths.

Shannon Foynes Port Information

Shannon Foynes Port (SFPC) are investing in an unprecedented expansion at its general cargo terminal, Foynes, adding over two-thirds the size of its existing area. In the latest phase of a €64 million investment programme, SFPC is investing over €20 million in enabling works alone to convert 83 acres on the east side of the existing port into a landbank for marine-related industry, port-centric logistics and associated infrastructure. The project, which will be developed on a phased basis over the next five years, will require the biggest infrastructure works programme ever undertaken at the port, with the entire 83 acre landbank having to be raised by 4.4 metres. The programme will also require the provision of new internal roads and multiple bridge access as well as roundabout access.
