Bunratty Search and Rescue receives €86,000 grant for boat purchase and repairs, aiding vital services across the Shannon Estuary and River Fergus. Funding supports 212 community projects nationwide.

Bunratty search and rescue has been given grant-aid under a community project funding round announced by the Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary.

Founded in 1981, Bunratty Search and Rescue is a volunteer-run search and rescue service covering the Shannon Estuary from Limerick to Glin and the River Fergus.

Calleary has awarded the group €86,000 for the purchase of boat and boat repairs.

The funding comes from a pot of over €17 million to deliver 212 community projects nationwide through the Community Recognition Fund.

This, the third announcement of projects under the 2024 fund, “will deliver real and tangible benefits to communities across the country who have welcomed new arrivals in recent years to their cities, towns and villages”, Calleary’s department says.

Improvements to community centres, a wide range of recreational facilities, and the purchase of buildings and lands for future shared use by communities are among projects also given funding.

Shannon Foynes Port Information

Shannon Foynes Port (SFPC) are investing in an unprecedented expansion at its general cargo terminal, Foynes, adding over two-thirds the size of its existing area. In the latest phase of a €64 million investment programme, SFPC is investing over €20 million in enabling works alone to convert 83 acres on the east side of the existing port into a landbank for marine-related industry, port-centric logistics and associated infrastructure. The project, which will be developed on a phased basis over the next five years, will require the biggest infrastructure works programme ever undertaken at the port, with the entire 83 acre landbank having to be raised by 4.4 metres. The programme will also require the provision of new internal roads and multiple bridge access as well as roundabout access.
