Atlantic Ocean solo rower Dr.Karen Weekes has just published the second edition of her book on her voyage, after the success of her first run. The initial edition of Turbulent Waters–Coping in Extremes sold out in just six weeks.
New Edition — The second edition of Dr Karen Weekes' memoir Turbulent Waters: Coping in Extremes, based on her solo Atlantic crossing and lessons in resilience
Drawing on the experience of rowing the Atlantic Ocean solo in 2021-2022, her riveting account has been described as an authentic and honest account of fear, resilience, and the emotional highs and lows of her ocean crossing. The compelling personal story of extreme endurance also shares practical and psychological coping tools that can be applied not only in sport, but also in work and everyday life.
As Afloat has reported, the Kinvara-based adventurer and sports psychologist had set out from Gran Canaria on December 6th, 2021, and spent 80 days rowing at sea, crossing 3,000 miles of ocean in her 25ft vessel, Millie, named after her mother. She survived relentless storms, hallucinations, shark encounters, crushing exhaustion and eighty days of solitude, which, she says,
“rewired her understanding of human resilience”.
Copies of her book at 15 euro can be purchased on Karenweekes.com and in Charlie Byrne's bookshop in Middle Street, Galway, or in Lia Mara and Wildbeans in Kinvara, Co Galway.
