The First Minister of Scotland said the deal to safeguard four Harland and Wolff shipyards provides “tremendous security and opportunity” for both workers and communities, writes The Irish News.
John Swinney MSP has hailed the “landmark moment” as the head of new owners, the Spanish state-owned firm Navantia, visited one of the two yards in Methil on the Firth of Forth estuary, east Scotland.
It, together with the yards in Arnish on the Isle of Lewis, Belfast, Appledore in Devon, England, was taken over by the Spanish firm at the end of January.
The acquisition will protect more than 1,000 jobs across the sites on both sides of the Irish Sea, with Navantia chairman Ricardo Dominguez visiting the yard in Fife yesterday (5 Feb).
To mark the visit, a ceremony took place, and Mr. Swinney thanked Navantia for “securing the future” of the yard.
