It’s for days like this that we sail Flying Fifteens on Dublin Bay, a sunny warm afternoon with a nice force 3/4 from the SE on excellent courses set by Suzanne McGarry and her team on Freebird. There were two races, the first won by Ian Mathews & Keith Poole in Gruffalo and the second won by Chris Doorly & Alan Green in Frequent Flyer.

It was the last Saturday of the DBSC summer series and the thirteen boats that turned out enjoyed great conditions and close racing. Coughlin & Marshal were in great form sailing particularly well having two thirds.

In Race 1 Mathews was out of the blocks quickly and led all the way, Doorly & Green were second close behind and chased Mathews all the way, these two extended their lead, behind it was a closer affair but Coughlin & Marshal managed to pull ahead of the Cahills to take third place. It was not a very shifty day so places tended to stay as they were over the four laps.

In Race 2 the line was square, most boats headed in to the right, Green helming this race, went more left out to sea hoping for more wind, it was close at the weather mark but Mathews coming from the right got the lead, Green was second followed closely by Coughlin and the Meaghers. Green and Mathews pulled ahead and Green got close on the second beat tacked inside Mathews to take advantage of one of the few shifts of the day to close the gap. On the last beat Mathews outhaul came undone, he managed to half fix it but Green took advantage and just nipped it on the line. Behind Coughlin and the Meaghers were having a great ding dong sail but Coughlin got into third.

It was great to see so many boats out racing, the turn outs this season has been fantastic. Thanks must go to Ronan Beirne and his committee for encouraging people to get out even it is isn’t with their usual crew or helm. Next week the NYC Frostbite Series starts and will continue into November.

The class travels to Lough Derg in October for the Western Championships. While other classes fold up their sails the flying fifteen class have two more events!

Tony Fox's Gringo leads Class one IRC after three races of the Dublin Bay Sailing Club Cruiser Challenge today.

The first day was one of mixed fortunes for many crews with plenty of retirees due to damage, a collision and strong shifty winds.

#fireball – 'I see no flags' – To paraphrase Nelson, I saw no flags last night flying from the DMYC to signify that racing in the DBSC Tuesday Series was cancelled writes Cormac Bradley. This is intended only as an observational statement not as a commentary on flag protocol.

The weather forecast for the evening wasn't that attractive – winds in the high teens with gusts of 33 knots. The seascape was grey and there was a dampness in the air, all in stark contrast to the evening we had enjoyed last week.

At 18:15, viewed from my office window, there was some activity in the DMYC dinghy park but not a great deal. There was wind but not what had been forecast!

However, there were no flags flying to suggest that at this early stage that racing was in jeopardy. I left for home slightly thereafter and when I returned neither the harbour nor Scotsman's Bay had any dinghy activity. Coming across one of the Fireball crews, I established that racing had been cancelled.

Tomorrow, Thursday, sees the biennial Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta start and eight Fireballs are entered for the event. They will enjoy racing over the Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning.

#flyingfifteen – On a balmy summer's evening Neil Colman & Mick Quinn in Flyer won the Flying Fifteen DBSC race last night comfortably in the end but they didn't have it all their own way as O'Sullivan with Ben Mulligan crewing lead for the first part of the race.

On what looked like a perfect evening for sailing it turned out to be challenging with the strong incoming tide and a shifty s-se wind. The question was whether to go inshore out of the tide or to stay out in the tide but pick up the stronger wind. Out worked and as the fleet approached Bullock mark those who stayed out lead the way including O'Sullivan, Colman and Dooley.

It was on to East mark and then Pier, at Pier the wind went soft, Colman closed the gap and on the beat up to Island mark took the lead which he held to the end to deservedly take the gun. Meanwhile Green had moved up to third and was neck and neck with O'Sullivan, a poor mark rounding ended the challenge and O'Sullivan was second with Green third. McCambridge was an excellent fourth followed by the O'Neills in fifth.

It was a great night's racing but it should be noted that there were a couple of close port and starboard incidents on the course- crews need to look more diligently and react in good time!
This weekend the fleet head to Dunmore East for the South Coast Championships.
