Three people have died in the waters around Tenerife as the Canary island experiences a spate of extremely high waves.
According to Euronews, at least 15 people were also injured in various incidents around the island’s coastline on Saturday (8 November).
At El Cabezo de Granadilla de Abona beach in the south of Tenerife, the body of a man was found floating in the sea.
In the north of the island, 10 people were swept off the quayside at Puerto de la Cruz. One woman died in the incident, with three others critically injured.
Later in the afternoon, a man was reported to have fallen into the sea at Charco del Viento. His body was later recovered by helicopter.
Elsewhere, at the Roque de Las Bodegas beach in Taganana, six French tourists were swept into the sea by high waves, after allegedly ignoring a warning marker in the area. Five were hospitalised with the sixth treated at the scene.
The Canary Islands, a popular destination for Irish holidaymakers year-round, remain on high alert for waves as high as four metres as stormy conditions batter the Spanish archipelago off the coast of north-west Africa.
