Wicklow RNLI successfully brought three fishermen to safety on Thursday, October 17th, after their vessel experienced mechanical problems just one nautical mile east of Newcastle, Co. Wicklow.
The all-weather lifeboat RNLB Bridie O'Shea was launched at 12:15 pm upon receiving reports of a fishing boat with engine failure. Under the command of Coxswain Nicky Keogh, the volunteer lifeboat crew swiftly located the distressed vessel 10 minutes after launching despite challenging weather conditions, including westerly winds at force 4/5, moderate seas, and good visibility.
Recognising that the fishermen were unable to make safe onward progress, the crew decided that towing the vessel to the nearest safe port at Wicklow Harbour was the best course of action, given the boat's engine failure and the sea state at the time. The tow was successfully established, and the casualty vessel was secured alongside at Wicklow Harbour at 1:20 pm.
Coxswain Nicky Keogh of Wicklow RNLI emphasized the importance of carrying an effective means of communication, such as a VHF radio or mobile phone, on board in case of an emergency. Keogh highlighted that such communication played a crucial role in the successful rescue operation.
The volunteer crew's training and preparedness for challenging conditions proved to be vital in ensuring the safe rescue of the fishermen.
