At 4:39 p.m. on Sunday, May 18th, RNLI volunteers received an urgent call from HM Coastguard. They were requested to assist at Crawfordsburn beach following reports of an 18-foot speed boat taking on water.
Upon arrival, the lifeboat crew found the boat submerged. The sole occupant had reached the shore safely, where the HM Coastguard team provided assistance. He was later transferred to the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for treatment of shock.

The cause of the sinking remains unclear. Lifeboat helm Gavin Mitchell assessed the situation and determined the boat was not obstructing marine traffic or causing environmental harm. Consequently, it was deemed unrecoverable.
The coastguard stood down the lifeboat and returned it to Bangor station, where it was refuelled and prepared for future service by 6:25 p.m.
