Wicklow RNLI launched both lifeboats on Sunday, 24 May, following reports of four people in difficulty in the water at Silver Strand beach. The all-weather lifeboat RNLB Bridie O’Shea and the inshore lifeboat Dennis Audrey launched shortly before midday.
Conditions at sea were calm with good visibility as crews made best speed to the scene. Dublin-based Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 116 was already on location when the RNLI crews arrived. The inshore lifeboat, helmed by Alan Goucher, went ashore to gather information about the incident.
Meanwhile, Coxswain Nicky Keogh, commanding the all-weather lifeboat, coordinated a search for the four reported casualties. The inshore crew quickly established that all four people had reached shore safely and required no further assistance.
All emergency response units were then stood down by the Coast Guard and returned to base.
Speaking after the callout, Coxswain Nicky Keogh praised the speed of the volunteer response. “This was an incredibly quick response by the volunteers here at Wicklow RNLI,” he said. “We were happy to hear that everyone was safe and well.”
He also reminded the public to contact emergency services if they witness anyone in difficulty in the water. “If you see anyone in trouble in the water, please dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard,” he said.
