Enniskillen RNLI’s inshore lifeboat Ted Dawber was launched at the request of Belfast Coastguard to assist five people onboard two vessels shortly before 6pm on Saturday evening (9 May).
The coastguard requested assistance following a report that a J24 yacht with three people aboard had developed problems and was drifting close to Devenish Island on Lower Lough Erne in Northern Ireland.
A second vessel, with two people onboard, went to help and developed engine problems. Winds were northerly Force 2 with good visibility.
The PSNI boat also launched and arrived at the scene first. All onboard were deemed safe and well and were transferred to the police boat.
The second casualty vessel was anchored, and the J24 was taken under tow to Lough Erne Yacht Club. The RNLI volunteer crew then arrived at the scene and took the Shetland boat under tow to the yacht club, ensuring clear passage on the main navigation channel.
The Lough Erne Coastguard team were on shore to assist at the yacht club.
Speaking following the call-out, Andy Wilson, Enniskillen RNLI helm said: “It’s that time of year, when more people are starting to make the most of our waterways. With that in mind, we would ask all water users to carry out regular maintenance to their vessels and have a means of calling for assistance if you find yourself in trouble.
“If you see someone or something in trouble on the water or are in difficulties yourself the number to dial is 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.”
