Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue will benefit from funds raised at the Ballinskelligs Triathlon in south Kerry next month. The event on June 13th involves a sprint and Olympic distance, and the local community hosting it is urging all sports enthusiasts to take part. The event caters for all abilities and also offers a team event so anyone can take part, it says.

As The Irish Independent’s South Kerry news reports, the event’s sprint distance is a 750m swim, a 20k cycle, and a 5km run, while the
The Olympic distance is 1,500m, a 40km cycle, followed by a 10km run.

Both events are set in the picturesque surroundings of the beautiful Ballinskelligs on the Iveragh Peninsula, it says. The swim off Ballinskelligs Beach is “in pristine waters that have just achieved a blue flag and, given the location, it is rare for a swim to be cancelled in this sheltered cove”, it says.

The run will also be partially along this special beach, while the cycle will offer spectacular views over St Finian’s Bay and the UNESCO site of Skellig Michael.

Ballinskelligs Triathlon was formerly organised by Alan Ryan of Hardman Events, but has been handed over to the community. The local
organising committee has joined forces with Killarney Triathlon Club to host the event, and proceeds will also go to this club as well as
the local community.

Funds raised will go to St Michael’s Foilmore GAA Club and Ballinskelligs Inshore Rescue. Both clubs will be providing stewards for the day, and kayakers will be provided by the local surf club.

Entries should be made through the Triathlon Ireland website. Read The Irish Independent’s South Kerry news here.
