Larne RNLI rescued two people aboard a disabled fishing boat off the County Antrim coast on Sunday evening after the vessel suffered mechanical failure. The volunteer crew launched the all-weather lifeboat Machiko Nancy at 7.42 pm on 6 July at the request of HM Coastguard.
Coxswain Chris Dorman, Mechanic Derek Rea, Navigator Barry Kirkpatrick and crew members Ross Stewart, Shea McFerran and Catherine Lee responded to the call. The fishing boat was located north-east of the East Maidens Lighthouse, close to the main shipping lanes. Conditions were good, with a southerly breeze and smooth seas.
After assessing the situation, Coxswain Dorman confirmed both crew members were safe. The vessel had broken down because of a mechanical fault. The safest option was to establish a tow and bring the boat back to the Port of Larne.
The RNLI crew towed the vessel into the harbour before switching to an alongside tow for the final manoeuvre to the south end quay. HM Coastguard and RNLI shore crew members Andy Purves, Joshua Kane, Willie Evans and Chris Lynn were waiting to assist on arrival.
Following the rescue, Coxswain Chris Dorman praised the crew's preparedness. "We would like to wish the crew well. The casualties were wearing the correct safety equipment and had the means to contact the Coastguard. They did the right thing when they realised that they had broken down," he said.
He also urged boat owners to prepare thoroughly before putting to sea. "We would encourage anyone planning a trip to sea to check their vessels and ensure engines are well-maintained. When going out, always carry adequate tools and spares and ensure you have enough fuel for your journey. If you do get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard."
