A lone sailor was brought safely to Wicklow Harbour after their yacht became entangled in pot ropes off the Codling Bank late on Tuesday night. Wicklow RNLI launched its all-weather lifeboat, RNLB Bridie O'Shea, shortly after 11pm on 7 July, following a Pan Pan call from a yacht eight miles north-east of Wicklow Harbour.
The volunteer crew, led by Coxswain Tommy McAuley, reached the casualty at 11.35 pm in calm seas and light winds. After assessing the situation, the coxswain decided the safest option was to tow the yacht to harbour because it was unable to make way and was close to the Codling Bank and a busy shipping lane.
The initial tow proved unsuccessful when the crew discovered the yacht was firmly caught in ropes attached to a line of fishing pots. Two RNLI volunteers were transferred aboard the yacht and used a grapple to free the ropes. Once released, the tow was re-established, and the yacht was brought safely alongside in Wicklow Harbour at 2.30 am.
Speaking after the rescue, Coxswain Tommy McAuley praised the sailor's actions. "The sailor made the right decision in calling for assistance early before any further difficulties may have occurred," he said. "I would like to commend the volunteer crew for their work during a challenging call out."
He also reminded people heading afloat during the current spell of good weather to wear a flotation device and carry a reliable means of communication. "If you see anyone in trouble on the water, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard," he said.
